Tackling Unequal Access to Digital Education in Viet Nam during the COVID-19 Pandemic

SDGs Impacted

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, by the Vietnamese government launched the Internet Connection and Computers for Students program. The closure of schools due to the pandemic exacerbated the digital divide in the country, with a significant number of students lacking access to online education. The program aims to narrow this divide and provide equal access to digital education for all students by 2023. The case study explores how Vietnam, as a developing country, has sought to quickly address the challenges of remote learning and ensure widespread access to digital education across the country.

Impact / Outcome
The program mobilized more than 12,550 desktop computers and tablets, more than 16,000 smartphones, and 74,500 other online learning tools, which were distributed to students within 1 month (from September to October 2021). The program has involved 52 departments of education and training, and many universities, colleges, and donors in 52 of Viet Nam’s 63 provinces.
