Telebirr is Ethiopia's first mobile money platform, launched in May 2021 by Ethio Telecom. It extends financial services to broader swaths of Ethiopian society – especially financially excluded groups – allowing mobile users to make simple, efficient, and secure money transfers and payments. The app, which is available on both Android and iOS systems, also allows people to purchase goods and services both in person and online, receive remittances, and even withdraw cash from authorized agents across the country. More than one million cellphone subscribers in Ethiopia registered for Telebirr within the first week of launch.
