## FMC publishes new report on high-emitting sectors: challenges and opportunities for low-carbon suppliers

3 September 2024

A new report offers a supplier-focused analysis of the value chain, decarbonization pathways, and the challenges and opportunities associated with scaling up low-carbon technologies.Given the scale and complexity of decarbonization, strategic engagement from governments, investors, policymakers, and the public is critical.Unique opportunities and challenges to accelerate offtake exist across various high-emitting sectors: aviation, trucking, shipping, steel, aluminum, cement/concrete, and carbon dioxide removal.Suppliers play a crucial role in piloting, developing, and scaling up the low-carbon technologies necessary for global decarbonization. They drive innovation and bring novel technologies to market, significantly influencing downstream emissions across the global value chain.A recent report, High-Emitting Sectors: Challenges and Opportunities for Low-Carbon Suppliers, by the World Economic Forum’s First Movers Coalition and Deloitte, provides an analysis from the supplier's perspective on the value chain, decarbonization pathways, and challenges and opportunities for scaling up their technologies. The report focuses on carbon dioxide removal and six key sectors: aviation, shipping, trucking, aluminium, cement/concrete, and steel, which together represent approximately 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Each of these sectors face unique challenges to decarbonization. They also share some common ones: many climate technologies are nascent, and uncertainty remains around how to scale these solutions. Overcoming obstacles such as lack of emission measurement methods and standards, availability and cost of inputs, and buyers’ risk aversion and unfamiliarity with decarbonized solutions will require actions by government, academia, industry, finance and other stakeholders.Based on these findings, the First Movers Coalition calls on all stakeholders to reflect on the insights shared in this report and engage in a concerted effort to advance sustainability. Whether through adopting new technologies, enhancing supplier relationships, or participating in global forums, the path forward should be one of collaboration and innovation. This report is a critical piece of though leadership that emerged from findings from the World Economic Forum’s First Movers Coalition (FMC). The FMC was established to accelerate breakthrough technologies and send credible, large-scale demand signals to carbon-intensive sectors. As part of this effort, the Forum, with strategic support from Deloitte Consulting, created the First Suppliers Hub (FSH). The FSH serves as a global repository where suppliers share information on their low-carbon projects to facilitate information-sharing and offtake agreements.
