Summary

The plant in Tasmania will combine green hydrogen from a 240MW water electrolysis plant with synthesis gas from a biomass gasifier to produce green methanol. The production process will use 100% renewable power from hydro and new wind production assets, fresh water from major river systems and biomass residues recovered from existing Tasmanian plantation forestry operations. The production site will be clean in its operation with virtually zero GHG emissions, water vapour emissions, or effluent discharge. The production process is odourless and the product is biodegradable and easy to handle as a clear liquid. This project will produce over 300,000tpa of green methanol with shipping identified as the principal offtake.

Description of Technology:

Green Methanol shipping fuel will be produced from 100% FSC/PEFC certified residue material from plantations or agricultural waste compliance with REDIII and ISCC and 100% renewable geographic and temporal supply from hydro electricity/onshore wind and solar. Partners for this project include SunGas Renewables providing gasification from waste biomass, ThyssenKrup providing hydrogen electrolysis, and Johnson Matthey providing methanol synthesis.
