Summary

CO2Vault is a CDR project based on Biomass Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), where CO2 is removed from the atmosphere by permanently storing biogenic CO2 produced by biomethane plants. In such plants, biogas from the digestion of organic waste is upgraded to biomethane and biogenic CO2. The CO2 is, in turn, liquefied and transported – via truck trailers - to a geological underground storage site. From 2026 onwards, truck trailers are expected to be replaced by a CO2 pipeline infrastructure, as CO2Vault project will be deployed in close proximity to the only Southern European CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) hub, namely in Ravenna – Italy. Remarkably, this CCS project received the status of European Project of Common Interest in November 2023.

Description of Technology:

Biogenics CO2 will be stored in Ravenna CCS hub (Northen Italy, 500 Million ton initial storage size, Project of Common Interest - PCI - status awarded in Nov.2023). More info to be found here: https://www.eni.com/ravenna-ccs/en-IT/home.html
