Summary

Summary:

Since 2021, Carbon Upcycling has operated its commercial demonstration facility and deployed ~3,000 tonnes of high-performance, low-carbon cement products made from upcycled CO2 and reclaimed fly ash to the Alberta construction industry.

Carbon Upcycling, together with partners BURNCO and Lafarge, will now deploy two new commercial-scale ash beneficiation facilities to supply the growing demand for low-carbon building materials.

The projects will enable a resilient domestic supply of supplementary cementitious materials to reduce the reliance on foreign industry while putting CO2 and reclaimed industrial solid waste to productive use in our economy.

Description of technology:

The commercial system will directly sequester CO2 emissions from industrial flue gas into legacy fly ash reclaimed from decommissioned coal power plants. The legacy fly ash is enhanced by the process and used to reduce carbon-intensive cement while creating a stronger, more resilient concrete.

Through sequestration and cement displacement, the deployment of Carbon Upcycling's technology will reduce the embodied carbon of concrete through carbon capture and abatement while reclaiming legacy fly ash from the environment.
