CURA's Taber facility is a co-located demonstration project adjacent to a sugar beet processing plant in southern Alberta. The project converts spent agricultural lime — a calcium carbonate waste stream from sugar beet processing — into decarbonized cement using CURA's electrochemical technology. Rather than mining virgin limestone, the facility repurposes approximately 1 million tonnes of waste lime sitting on-site, turning an industrial byproduct into a low-carbon feedstock. CURA's process dissolves the waste lime using electrochemically generated acid, releasing a pure CO2 stream that is captured and fed back to the sugar beet facility for use in their process. The remaining calcium is precipitated into calcium hydroxide, which is then used in place of conventional limestone in a standard cement kiln to produce industry-standard ordinary Portland cement — chemically identical to general use cement on the market today. The facility will supply decarbonized cement to Grand Forks Concrete, CURA's commercial partner, for use in pre-cast concrete products. The project is expected to be operational by 2028 and will serve as CURA's primary reference project for full-scale commercial deployment. Description of Technology:
CURA develops electrochemical decarbonization technology for cement producers. The core technology is a modular electrochemical system that replaces the calcination step in conventional cement production – dissolving limestone or waste calcium carbonate feedstocks using electrochemically generated acid, releasing a pure CO2 stream for capture or utilization, and producing calcium hydroxide that feeds directly into an existing cement kiln to produce industry-standard ordinary Portland cement clinker. The technology is sold and licensed to cement producers as a retrofit solution, integrating into existing plant infrastructure without requiring new supply chains or changes to the final cement product.
