Summary

P2H2 makes an electrolyzer that is optimized for renewable energy integration.

Description of Technology:

P2H2 makes an electrolyzer that is optimized for renewable energy integration. Many electrolyzers today produce hydrogen for ~50kWh/kg, but the total energy content in a kg of hydrogen is 39.4/kWh/kg (HHV). There is some room for improvement in electrolysis efficiency above 80%, but the easiest way to drive down the cost of clean hydrogen is to use behind the meter wind and solar with higher variability and intermittency. Anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers are capable of tying into renewable energy while using only nickel and stainless steel to replace the precious metals used in PEM electrolyzers. These low-cost materials create the opportunity to reduce the electrolysis stack cost by 65% compared to a PEM electrolyzer. However, these AEM electrolyzers struggle from durability concerns, typically breaking before a year of operation. P2H2’s proprietary patents and trade secrets solve these durability issues. In pilots with EDP and E.ON, P2H2 has shown an 80% decrease in degradation compared to existing technology benchmarks.
