Summary

Building materials multinational CRH has invested and partnered with Carbon Upcycling to deploy the company’s first commercial-scale system at its Ash Grove Mississauga cement plant. The project will be the world’s first to capture CO2 emissions from the cement kiln to enhance local steel slags into products for low-carbon blended cement.

The project with CRH develops a resilient domestic supply of SCMs to reduce the reliance on foreign industry while putting CO2 and industrial solid waste to productive use in our economy.

Description of technology:

The commercial system will directly sequester CO2 emissions from the cement kiln into steel slag (solid waste byproduct of steel making) sourced from a local steel manufacturer. The steel slag is enhanced by the process and used to reduce clinker in cement.

Through sequestration and clinker displacement, the installation of Carbon Upcycling's technology aims to prevent ~25,000 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere on an annual basis and upcycle ~30,000 tonnes of steel slag into SCMs for low-carbon blended cement.
