Summary

CBA has invested in a variety of decarbonization initiatives for its Integrated Plant to achieve significant decarbonization with values close to 3t of CO2e per metric tonne of primary aluminum produced. Additional improvements will result in a large part of its production meeting the FMC threshold by 2030. Technology investments include a biomass boiler (2020). In 2020, CBA started sourcing steam from a reforestation sourced wood chip biomass boiler, replacing natural gas and fuel oil consumption in the Alumina refinery. With the implementation of this project, CBA’s refinery boasted the lowest carbon emissions intensity in the world, according to CRU International - Emissions Tool. The boiler was responsible for reducing emissions from the refinery stage by over 60%. CBA is also working on carbon capture to achieve even lower carbon emissions.
