Summary

BioCarbon's simple substitution of fossil carbon with renewable carbon. Any process where fossil carbon such as coal or coke find application, renewable carbon product is a potential substitute.

Description of Technology:

Industrial scale char. When renewable carbon is used in a process, it prevents fossil carbon being transformed into CO2. When fossil carbon is the source of CO2 emission from a process, renewable carbon reduces the emission intensity to zero. For technical and commercial reasons BioCarbon's focus began with EAF steelmaking. EAF uses a lot of electricity and heat, and in many cases there is either full or partial access to power from renewable sources. An EAF operation still needs a notable amount of solid carbon for chemical processing requirements which is one of the reasons the steel industry is considered difficult to decarbonise. Carbon acts as a reductant, provides heat, enhances the efficiency of deoxidation and is used as an alloying addition. The role carbon plays in achieving those process objectives will remain unchanged, and therefore renewable carbon is fundamental to reduce the overall CO2 intensity of the process. In fact, producing truly green steel is possible only when renewable carbon; completely replaces the use of fossil carbon.
