Heirloom is a technology partner in the Federally-funded Project Cypress DAC Hub in Louisiana, which will scale-up to remove one million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere annually through up to $600 million in matched funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Heirloom has announced plans to deploy its part of Project Cypress in Northwest Louisiana, with operations commencing in 2028. Heirloom’s Cypress facility will initially remove 100k tCO2 per year, with the project expanding in later years to 300k tCO2 per year.
Description of Technology:
The project combines direct air capture (DAC) technology and proven geologic storage capacities. Heirloom’s technology rapidly accelerates the natural processes that enable limestone to adsorb CO2 from the air from a time span of years down to days. In this process, the limestone is heated in a renewable-energy powered electric kiln to remove the CO2 which is then permanently stored. The mineral is laid on vertically stacked trays - where the limestone acts like a sponge, pulling CO2 from the atmosphere. This process is repeated over again in a loop to continuously sponge CO2 from the atmosphere.
