Summary

Helios has developed the “Helios Cycle," a novel technology for iron ore reduction process that substitutes sodium for carbon , applicable also to low-grade ores (34% Fe successfully tested) . The Helios Cycle furnace is strategically designed as an alternative to existing Blast Furnaces and DRI technologies, the goal is to have a simple, plug-and-play furnace to integrate into existing steel production lines or new plants which can include installation near miming sites to produce Briquetted iron , for shipping to steel producers.

Description of Technology:

Helios has developed the “Helios Cycle,” a novel technology for iron ore reduction process that substitutes sodium for carbon. The Helios Cycle yields metallic iron powder, which can later be formed into Briquetted Iron (HBI/CBI). The process has zero-direct CO2 emissions, with oxygen being the only byproduct besides gangue-related compounds. The reducing agent (sodium) is thermally recycled, ensuring a cost-effective, sustainable, and environmentally friendly solution. Helios is focusing on a two-stage process with inputs of iron ore, sodium, and thermal energy. The full process takes place at a temperature ranging between 300 to 550°C, with an estimated energy consumption of 3.4 MWh/Mt iron. The Helios Cycle, can successfully process low-grade iron ores, demonstrated on 34% Fe, and while also demonstrates a remarkable indifference to various contaminants, including high levels of phosphorus and alumina. Helios Cycle also has the potential to convert unsellable tailings into premium product.
