Description of Technology:
Calix’s Zero Emissions Steel TechnologY (ZESTY) is the application of Calix’s core indirectly heated calcination technology to the direct reduction of iron ore with hydrogen (H-DRI). Electrification and the use of green hydrogen enables the conversion of iron ore to metal iron with near zero emissions. ZESTY uses indirectly heated reactor tubes to deliver radiative heat to the raw material. Electricity is used to heat the tubes and deliver the desired temperature for mineral processing. The many heating elements arranged around the tubes provide precise temperature control, allowing processing temperature profiles to be optimised for a given mineral product’s requirements and helping to maximise the energy efficiency of the process. Electrification and the use of renewable energy inputs can enable the steel industry to decouple its energy intensive heating requirements from the generation of carbon dioxide, other greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants.
