6 May 2024

Founding FMC member Trafigura has signed a contract for four Medium Gas Carriers (MGC) that will be capable of using low-carbon ammonia as a propulsion fuel when delivered. The vessels will be built at HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea. The four vessels will take a significant stride towards Trafigura meeting its FMC commitment to the shipping sector. The vessels will be delivered starting in 2027 and each vessel, when delivered, will be equipped with a dual-fuel low-carbon ammonia engine, supporting Trafigura’s commitment to reduce the carbon intensity of its own shipping fleet by 25 percent by 2030.As a founding member of the First Movers Coalition, Trafigura has committed that by 2030, 5 percent of all its deep-sea shipping will be powered by zero-emission fuels by 2030, and today’s announcement therefore marks an important step in meeting their FMC commitment. Trafigura is one of the world’s largest charterers of vessels, responsible for around 400 ships currently under management.“The members of First Movers Coalition are making bold decisions to progress on our shared ambitions for 2030. This announcement from Trafigura within shipping is another great step forward, further strengthening the demand signal towards low-carbon technologies,” said Mette Asmussen, Lead FMC Shipping and Lead, Maritime Sector Initiatives for World Economic Forum“We are excited to embark together with HD Hyundai Mipo on this ambitious project which supports our commitments to decarbonising shipping and will help us to develop the global low-carbon ammonia bunkering infrastructure needed for zero-carbon shipping to become a reality,” said Andrea Olivi, Head of Wet Freight for Trafigura.Read the full announcement from Trafigura here.
