New Jersey Data Center: Batteries as Grid Resources

A data center in New Jersey tests how on-site battery storage can enhance grid flexibility and reduce operational costs.

Iron Mountain is deploying a battery energy storage system at its New Jersey data center to provide flexible capacity to the grid while lowering electricity bills. The system will optimize dispatch using real-time grid signals, participate in local demand response programs, and serve as a replicable model for future deployments. It brings together the utility, grid operator, and battery asset owner in a collaborative setup.

Enablers:

  • Grid-integrated control system using real-time signals for battery dispatch
  • Simple, scalable battery storage design for multi-site replication
  • Supported by flexibility programs that reward load shifting with financial returns

Impact:

  • Can shed over 11 MW of load up to 2 hours
  • Reduces energy costs through participation in grid compensation programs
  • Demonstrates a scalable, behind-the-meter business model for data center flexibility
