# Women's Health Science and Innovation

Health conditions that uniquely, disproportionately, or differently impact women continue to be under-researched. The Alliance is convening a technical working group to collaborate on awareness-raising initiatives, research transparency, and the translation of breakthroughs into accessible therapies and diagnostics. The ambition is to shift the research landscape from limited physiological understanding toward a focus on sex-specific science and medicine that enables equitable outcomes.

## Medical research is failing women.

Women today are still significantly underrepresented in clinical trials. As a result, the sex-specific pathophysiology of diseases is still not well-understood, leading to wrong conclusions on safety and efficacy of drugs for women and incomplete medical research.

**5%** of medicines in Europe are labelled for use before, during or after pregnancy

**7%** of 2024 research and development spend in the pharmaceutical industry went towards women-specific conditions

**29-34%** of phase-1 clinical trial participants are women

## Closing the Research Gap in Women's Health

Building on our report, “Prescriptions for Change: Policy Recommendations for Women's Health Research” , the Alliance is collaborating with Kearney and the Gates Foundation to address gaps in the medical research ecosystem through the following aspects:

### Women's Health Innovation Radar

Launched in 2026, the Women’s Health Innovation Radar provides a comprehensive mapping of research projects and applied innovation across women’s health, linked to the top conditions by global GDP impact. The radar creates transparency, highlights unmet needs, and recognizes where progress is being made in women’s health science.

### Women’s Health Innovation Blueprint

Launching in 2026, this is a framework for enabling the translation of discoveries into real-world outcomes. The blueprint will explore co-development partnerships between academia and industry, outline regulatory and financial incentives, and define what must be true for sustainable innovation pathways.

### Policy

Bringing together regulators, payers, innovators, life-science companies and policy makers to help shape the next era of women’s health by driving innovation, catalyzing investment, and amplifying global momentum to close the women’s health gap.
