Challenge
Carlsberg Srbija produces 2,000,000 hectoliters (hl) of beer per year. The brewery needed to improve the sustainability of its operations, particularly to reduce energy and water consumption. Its goal was to align with Carlsberg Group's ambitious "ZERO Carbon Footprint" and "ZERO Water Waste" targets. Challenges included outdated energy management systems, inefficient resource use, and the need for real-time data to drive efficiency and sustainability. This impacted Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions.
By partnering with COPA-DATA and implementing their software platform, Carlsberg Srbija enhanced its data collection and monitoring capabilities, ultimately leading to significant improvements in sustainability and operational efficiency.
Solution
As a part of its sustainability journey, Carlsberg Srbija committed to further improving its energy and water management systems. To achieve this, the team implemented a solution that included real-time data collection, monitoring, and analysis from over 100 measurement points that tracked electricity, water and gas usage. By providing greater visibility of resource usage, opportunities for improvement can be easily identified and their impact tracked. This approach is designed to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions through better energy management and operational efficiency, while also addressing Scope 3 emissions related to waste management and resource use.
Carlsberg Srbija based its solution on the software platform from COPA-DATA. The platform enables efficient management of energy and resources through versatile and interdisciplinary automation and digitalization technologies.

The near-term successes of this initiative have been maximized and can be carried forward thanks to the creation of the new automation and digital infrastructure and the enhanced team capabilities necessary for future transformation towards "ZERO Carbon Footprint" and "ZERO Water Waste" targets.
Impact
The implementation of COPA-DATA’s software platform at Carlsberg Srbija has resulted in significant advancements in sustainability and operational efficiency, aligning with Carlsberg Group's environmental objectives. The initiative led to reductions in Scope 1 emissions from onsite fuel combustion and Scope 2 emissions from purchased energy. It also reduced Scope 3 emissions through improved resource management.
Specifically, the project achieved the following savings (2021-2024) for Carlsberg Srbija:
- Water: 4.5% [hl/hl]
- Electrical energy: 2.5% [kWh/hl]
- Steam: 5.9% [kWh/hl]
- CO2e: 9.6% [kg/hl]
Implemented over a four-year period, the initiative has generated significant savings through enhanced efficiency. The project has also resulted in enhanced real-time monitoring, better data accuracy, improved employee engagement, increased operational transparency, and improved overall efficiency.
