Telstra - Building smart modems and a sustainable supply chain

Telstra is a leading telecommunications and technology company and is the largest wireless carrier in Australia. The majority of Telstra’s carbon emissions come from its supply chain: Scope 3 emissions account for around 70% of total emissions.

To tackle the Scope 3 challenge, Telstra decided to start by spreading awareness with their top suppliers. Additionally, Telstra set up a supplier code of conduct, including ambitious carbon emission reduction targets.

Telstra learned through disclosure that a significant portion of its emissions are caused by the production of its modems. The company has therefore been concentrating on enhancing the sustainability of the manufacturing, packaging (smaller & recycled packages, etc.), and lifecycle of modems (circular economy principles, removing unnecessary items, etc.):

Resulting from this operation, Telstra first earned a place on the CDP A List in 2016 and has since consistently scored between an A and A-. Moreover, 106 of the 113 top suppliers disclose their supply chain data through the CDP.
