The Low Carbon Manufacturing Programme - Providing tools to cut Industry's carbon emissions

The Low carbon manufacturing programme is an initiative led by the WWF Hong Kong (NGO). It has two main objectives:

  1. Cut carbon emissions generated by manufacturing facilities
  2. Develop environmental and social governance for manufacturers

By providing manufacturers with a carbon accounting and labeling system, LCMP helps to measure their effectiveness in reducing carbon emissions and equip them with best practices in greenhouse gas management.

The low carbon manufacturing programme engages Manufacturers / supply chain actors across various sectors in China:

  • Textiles & apparel
  • Electrical appliances, electronic toys & houseware
  • Equipment & machinery,
  • Components manufacturing

The LCMP provides practical tools to factories for reducing carbon emissions. The major tools include:

  • A Carbon Accounting Software
  • Greenhouse Gas Management Practice
  • Factory General Utilities and Manufacturing Processes Practice

Once these tools are implemented, the LCMP provides factories with green labels that range from ‘Platinum’, ‘Gold’, ‘Silver’ and ‘Certified’ based on adherence to requirements, such as:

  • Implementation of a sophisticated greenhouse gas management system
  • Achieving best-practice energy efficiency
  • Achieving a significant greenhouse gas emissions reduction

57 factories have participated in the programme since 2010, they collectively avoided over 14,000 tons of carbon emissions
