Creating fire-ready neighborhood pilots — Tahoe Fund (Lake Tahoe)

Solution Convene fire districts, HOAs, researchers and technology providers to identify, prioritize and implement the highest-impact wildfire mitigations for homes, streets and shared spaces, supported by a replication playbook. Key challenge Communities need a practical, replicable way to determine and implement the wildfire mitigations that matter most across homes and shared spaces. Context The Fire Smart Community Pilot launched in spring 2025 in the Tahoe region to create more fire-ready communities by combining local fire district expertise, willing homeowners associations, wildfire researchers, and new technologies. Pilot projects are underway in six communities, and the effort is framed as a demonstration of comprehensive wildfire defense that can be replicated across the western United States. Solution in practice The program brings together partner organizations and tech companies working on wildfire resilience to support residents with expert guidance, tools and resources, then helps participating communities identify, prioritize and implement wildfire risk mitigations across individual homes as well as neighborhood infrastructure like streets and shared spaces. A step-by-step playbook has been published so other communities can replicate the pilot approach beyond Tahoe. Impact / outcome Pilots under way in six communities; replication playbook published. Next steps Use the published playbook to replicate the pilot model in additional communities across the West, continuing to convene fire districts, HOAs, researchers and technology providers to apply the same identify-prioritize-implement process at neighborhood scale.
