# State of Nature Metrics applied to the blue economy

## What are State of Nature Indicators and Metrics?

The State of Nature (SoN) Indicators and Metrics, developed by the Nature Positive Initiative, give organisations a shared, science-based way to know whether nature is stable, declining or recovering where they operate, and to track progress towards a nature-positive world. Leading sustainability frameworks such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) have already integrated the metrics, helping create greater consistency and interoperability for businesses and financial institutions.

There is growing ambition to act for nature among many ocean-based industries, but activity alone does not tell us whether nature is recovering.State of Nature Metrics and Indicators help organisations measure real changes in ecosystems and species in marine environments and beyond. This focus on nature outcomes helps businesses and investors take credible action and direct capital towards improved ocean health.ACT Ocean has worked as a technical partner of NPI, together with the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA), to illustrate how the metrics apply across marine sectors.
