Empowering Rural Entrepreneurs: Yara’s Digital Capacity Building Programme in India

Digital skills are a key enabler for the adoption of technological solutions. As a response, Yara Africa & Asia’s Capacity Building Programme, launched in 2022, is a digitally-driven initiative empowering rural MSMEs in India and Kenya—particularly women and youth— through formal business education. The 15-week MBA-inspired curriculum is delivered via pre-loaded tablets and a custom-built mobile app, enabling access even in low-connectivity areas. Participants learn business planning, financial literacy, and customer engagement through interactive, self-paced content.

In India, the “Plus-One” model promotes female inclusion by inviting male participants to nominate a female family member. Starting with 500 Yara channel partners and expanding to 699 participants—including FPO members, Bayer BLF centers, SHG women, and rural youth—the initiative blends tech with community.

Each participant receives weekly mentorship from trained Impact Champions, reinforcing learning and building confidence. Now certified by NCVET and MEPSC, the programme combines digital tools, inclusive pedagogy, and local mentorship to create a growing pipeline of certified, tech-enabled rural entrepreneurs and changemakers ready for the future.
