# About the Future of Blockchain and Digital Assets initiative

## Understanding the blockchain ecosystem

Blockchain is a disruptive technology that – when deployed responsibly – can empower users, reduce corruption and increase trust. Cryptocurrencies built on distributed ledger technology (DLT) have emerged as potential gateways to new wealth creation and disrupters across financial markets. Our Blockchain and Digital Assets workstreams aim to ensure equity, interoperability, transparency and trust in the governance of DLT, and to accelerate the necessary changes for this technology to reach its full potential.

## More about our workstreams

## Regulation of Digital Assets in a Shifting Global Landscape

This initiative will build on the Forum’s prior work of the Digital Currency Governance Consortium, Pathways to the Regulation of Crypto-Assets: A Global Approach, and Digital Assets Regulation: Jurisdictional Approaches. As regulation of digital assets continues to develop, governments are reassessing their digital asset policies not only as matters of domestic innovation, but also as instruments of financial diplomacy, monetary sovereignty, and global competitiveness. The workstream brings together public and private sector leaders to address these issues.

## Global Future Council on Decentralized Finance

Decentralized Finance has demonstrated significant growth, underscoring the viability of DeFi as an alternative to traditional finance. The integration of blockchain technology and smart contracts has enabled improved transparency and efficiency in financial transactions. Through this workstream, we aim to understand the trajectory of DeFi's potential within the broader financial ecosystem.Gatherings of 20 experts on DeFi will take place virtually and in-person during the two-year Global Future Council cycle. Outputs will be determined by the GFC members during this period.

## Asset Tokenization in Financial Markets

Tokenization offers a revolutionary digital ownership model that could transform financial markets. It enhances capital efficiency, reduces costs, enables dynamic ownership, and allows 24/7 operations, impacting both public and private markets. This workstream aims to analyze the tokenization landscape, define its value proposition and key use cases, and identify adoption strategies with a multi-stakeholder community. Findings from a multi-stakeholder group of experts were compiled in a comprehensive report and published in May 2025.
