Coal to Wind, Brayton Point Power Station

The Brayton Point power station was a 1,600 MW-capacity coal-fired power plant which ceased generation in 2017. It’s now being transformed into a renewable energy hub and international seaport.

Technology

In 2018, the site was purchased by Commercial Development Company (CDC) who has started to repurpose the site into a logistical port, manufacturing hub and support center for offshore wind. The new project will leverage access to the national grid’s substation and transmission grid.

In 2021, Mayflower Wind and Anbaric Development Partners signed an agreement for Mayflower Wind to use transmission assets developed by Anbaric to supply up to 2,000 MW of offshore wind power to the area. To that end, the site will be equipped with a 1,200MW HBDC converter, as well as 400MW of battery storage.
