The Agriculture Management Information System is being developed through a partnership between the Kenya Space Agency and Microsoft AI for Good to support smallholder farming. The project includes generating land use and land cover maps, identifying crop types, and creating a centralized data repository and crop dashboard. It also involves ongoing crop monitoring and the development of a crop yield estimation model to enhance agricultural planning and decision-making.
Prerequisites:
• Coordination mechanisms to aggregate needs efficiently
• Procurement pathway
• Partner support as needed
• Cybersecurity, data protection, and continuity planning
Cost:
• Ballpark: USD 100k–10M
• Includes: stakeholder consultations, expert advisory, site preparation and facilities, servers or cloud infrastructure, storage and backup, ETL pipelines and APIs, metadata/catalogue systems, cybersecurity, basic training
Timeframe:
• Overall: 12–36 mo
• Phase: scoping & design (3–6 mo), procurement & setup (6–12 mo), integration & testing (6–12 mo), training & operationalisation (3–6 mo)
Pros:
• Improved Decision Making - Enables informed decision-making by identifying areas that require investment and improvement
• Increased Resilience and Efficiency - Improves allocation of resources while improving recovery after disruption
• Cost Effectiveness - By mutualizing needs, it improves allocation of financial resources, maximizing impact while minimizing waste
Considerations:
• Dependency - Reliant on external providers
• Complexity - Potential integration and coordination issues
