Japan’s Space Strategy Fund (SSF), managed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, provides strategic and flexible funding to support collaborative R&D among private companies (including startups), universities, and national research institutes. The fund is designed to foster innovation and accelerate the development of advanced space technologies. Support for access to space: The SSF prioritises the development of low-cost, diversified space transportation systems, including support for private rocket launches and on-orbit servicing. The goal is to establish a robust industrial infrastructure capable of handling approximately 30 launches annually by the early 2030s.

Pros:
• Financial Burden Reduction – Reduces individual financial burdens, making large-scale projects more feasible.
• Market Access – Provides access to new markets and opportunities through shared networks and partnerships within a consortium.
Considerations:
• Governance Challenge – Manages and coordinates multiple stakeholders with different objectives and priorities, which can be challenging and may require robust governance and operating structures.
• Long R&D Timelines – Involves extended timelines for Access to Space R&D projects, which can challenge organisations seeking quick returns on investment.
