# Global Activator Network: Cervical and Breast Cancer Coalition

The Alliance is driving country-level impact in reducing the burden of breast cancer and eliminating cervical cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa, in partnership with public-private stakeholders uniquely positioned to drive progress.


## The Challenge

Breast and cervical cancers are significant public health issues in sub-Saharan Africa, constituting over half the cancer burden for women. Nearly 60-70% of women in African countries are diagnosed at a late stage- only one in two women diagnosed with breast cancer in an African country will survive five years, and cervical cancer remains the most common cause of all cancer-related deaths in African countries.


## The Opportunity

The Cervical and Breast Cancer Coalition aims to accelerate collaboration and strengthen commitments to support national public health goals in addressing cervical and breast cancer in sub-Saharan Africa. This is a unique coalition uniting engaged ministries of health and key public-private stakeholders well positioned to accelerate action towards national public health priorities, responding to the country needs and challenges in support of breast and cervical cancer prevention, diagnosis and care.The Coalition is driving impact at a country-level and improving cancer care for women by:


### Understanding Contexts

Getting a firsthand view of the current landscape, national strategic direction, challenges and key priorities in the implementation of cervical and breast cancer prevention and control activities at the country level.


### Fostering Partnerships

Strengthening partnerships and facilitating country dialogue with key public-private stakeholders to ensure coordinated resource mobilization and sustainability in the implementation of elimination interventions.


### Raising Awareness

Increasing awareness and advocacy for breast and cervical cancer to enhance the effectiveness of cancer prevention and control initiatives.


## Accelerating Country-Level Impact

The Coalition is complementing country efforts to reduce the burden of cervical and breast cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa through unique and impactful partnerships.


## Kenya

Breast and cervical account for 29.3% of all new cancer cases in Kenya. While the challenge to address cervical and breast cancer in Kenya is significant, it is also an achievable goal through concerted efforts, strategic planning, and international cooperation. The Alliance is playing a pivotal role in supporting Kenya by mobilising resources to implement the Afya Dada Project.


## The Afya Dada Project: Transforming Lives by Strengthening Systems for Breast and Cervical Cancer Detection and Care

Goal: To pilot a comprehensive model to improve breast and cervical cancer prevention, early detection and care in two selected high-burden counties that can feasibly be scaled and rolled-out nationally.Impact: Developing a sustainable, decentralized training model for cancer care that is scalable nationwide Strengthening capacity of healthcare workers to deliver screening, treatment and timely referral services Improving capacity of community health promoters to deliver cancer education and facilitate screening Enhancing referral pathways and timely access to diagnostic and treatment services Increasing community awareness and uptake of cancer screening services Improving early detection rates and timely referrals for treatment
