3.1 Overview of the Scope 3 Upstream Action Plan for Procurement Teams

The Scope 3 Upstream Action Plan calls on companies to engage a minimum of 67% of their supplier-base, based on emissions, and encourage them to set Scope 1-3 targets and decarbonize according to those targets (for more information, kindly refer to Chapter 1.3 “The Scope 3 Upstream Action Plan”).

With this focus on supplier engagement, the Action Plan aims to accelerate the decarbonization of Scope 3 upstream emissions.

While product design choices can play an important role in mitigating Scope 3 upstream emissions (e.g., by changing the type of input factors or materials that you need for your own products and operations), this Support Hub will focus on engaging and working with suppliers successfully and systematically to support them along their net-zero journey.

For this Action Plan to succeed, Procurement Teams should :

Understand the emissions profile of their suppliers to identify and prioritize those suppliers with the biggest impact on Scope 3 emissions.
Officially launch the Action Plan with suppliers to raise awareness of what your company expects suppliers to do by 2028 (i.e., to set Scope 1-3 targets and decarbonize accordingly).
Continuously work with and engage your suppliers to accompany them along their Net-Zero journey until they reach the North Star.

To complete the above steps systematically and successfully, sustainability will have to be embedded across all key aspects of the Procurement Function, including its processes, people and skills, tools and systems.
