Half of the emissions reductions needed by 2050 must come from technologies not yet available at scale, so creating demand for these technologies will be essential to kickstart the market and catalyze their commercial adoption.
The First Movers Coalition (FMC) advances the most critical, emerging climate technologies by leveraging members' collective purchasing power. The coalition now represents the world’s largest, private-sector demand signal for emerging climate technologies with more than 120 commitments from more than 90 members. These commitments cover seven sectors: aluminium, aviation, carbon dioxide removal, cement and concrete, shipping, steel and trucking. By 2030, these commitments will represent an estimated annual demand of $16 billion for emerging climate technologies and 31 million tonnes (Mt) CO2e in annual emissions reductions.
Demand signals themselves are not enough to push a market forward – they must be coupled with execution. In just two years, members have also made significant progress on commitments, delivering direct investment in climate technologies and tangible offtakes. In 2023 alone, FMC members collectively signed 35 offtake agreements that secured carbon reductions across all seven sectors, bringing the total number of offtake agreements signed in support of FMC commitments to 94.
FMC has launched the First Suppliers Hub, a global repository of innovative and emerging technologies and suppliers that are working to meet the FMC commitment thresholds across high-emissions sectors. The First Suppliers Hub features more than 80 decarbonization efforts that are currently underway and the hub will continue to grow as more decarbonization efforts are identified that meet the FMC commitment thresholds.
The First Suppliers Hub will become a pivotal tool that will accelerate climate action and tap into the immense potential of these emerging technologies. It will help accelerate and catalyze investment decisions for FMC members and will build a buyer-supplier ecosystem for emerging tech to scale and to reach a zero-carbon future. The database will feature an intake form for suppliers to add projects and an interface for buyers to view projects and contact suppliers.
