Strengthening Finland’s electricity grid against extreme weather through multiyear capital investment — Finland

Solution: Long-term capital investment in underground cabling, grid automation, and digital systems to improve resilience Key challenge Distribution networks remain highly exposed to recurring weather-related disruption without sustained investment in resilience upgrades.

Context: Finland’s electricity distribution system includes extensive overhead lines exposed to high-wind storms, snow, ice loading, and falling trees.

Solution in practice: Since acquiring Elenia, Macquarie supported a multiyear resilience strategy including undergrounding critical lines, reinforcing network segments, automation, remote monitoring, and digital grid management. Underground cabling increased from 41% to 66% by end-2025.

Impact / outcome: Underground cabling increased from 41% to 66% of the network by end-2025.

Next steps: Embed resilience upgrades into long-term utility capital programs, use performance evidence from extreme weather events to prioritize future investment, and support regulatory frameworks that enable continued grid hardening.
