The platform working environment is influenced by a range of factors, including traffic conditions and infrastructure quality to interactions with customers, merchants, and the general public. These conditions create a range of safety and operational challenges that require thoughtful, ongoing attention.

Platform workers highlight challenges around inadequate infrastructure, like poor lighting or road conditions, exposure to harsh weather, and unsafe zones within cities. Workers may also face difficult, disrespectful, or potentially dangerous interactions with consumers, merchants, or bystanders. Stress can arise from meeting time targets, navigating unsafe conditions, or managing incidents with limited immediate support. They also report concerns around account deactivation processes that may abruptly affect their earnings and financial security.

Platforms participating in this initiative shared examples of measures aimed at supporting safer and more inclusive platform-work environments.

Many provide road or traffic safety training to platform workers when they begin engaging with platforms, delivered through online modules, in-person workshops, first-aid classes, or partnerships with local authorities. These trainings aim to educate and support platform workers in their day-to-day decision-making and operations, building long-term awareness and skills.

Platforms are also redesigning product features to enhance support in case of accidents and raise awareness about safe driving behaviours. Examples include in-app emergency SOS buttons for immediate assistance, refraining from late-delivery penalties, and consumer-awareness campaigns that discourage unsafe practices such as calling drivers while en route. To address fatigue, some platforms send reminders encouraging platform workers to take breaks after long shifts.

Emerging practices also include supporting delivery workers with access to appropriate gear for challenging environmental conditions, such as cooling vests and high-quality waterproof attire, provided either at a discount or free of charge.

Technology is increasingly used to enhance safety, with platforms deploying signals to alert workers when performing risky manoeuvres and piloting telematics tools to analyse riding patterns and provide personalised feedback on driving behaviours such as hard braking or speeding. Many platforms also map high-risk areas, such as poorly lit streets or zones with theft reports, to offer rerouting suggestions and share these insights with municipal or state authorities to support improvements.

Platforms are also prioritising worker voice in shaping safety solutions. Through rider councils, listening groups, co-designed workshops, and in-app reporting channels, platform workers can highlight safety concerns, propose improvements, and test new features before wider implementation, helping to ensure that interventions reflect real on-the-ground conditions and building trust between platform workers and platforms.

Improving working conditions for platform workers is an ongoing and shared responsibility. Listening closely to platform workers’ experiences, acting on their insights, and maintaining collaboration among platforms, governments, and communities are essential to promote safer and more supportive working environments.
