## The Problem

Rice cultivation is a significant contributor to global methane emissions, responsible for approximately 10-12% of these emissions. Traditional farming practices, such as continuous flooding of rice paddies, create anaerobic conditions that promote methane production. In addition to its environmental impact, these practices lead to excessive water use and can negatively affect rice yields, especially as climate conditions continue to shift. Studies indicate that for every 1°C rise in the rice-growing season, yields can decline by over 8%, posing a serious threat to global food security and the livelihoods of millions of farmers who rely on rice production.

## The Solution

Decarbonising Rice, developed by Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory, addresses these challenges through an integrative and science-driven approach. The initiative combines sustainable water management techniques, soil microbiome enhancement, and the development of climate-resilient rice varieties to reduce methane emissions, optimize water and fertilizer usage, improve soil health, and boost crop yields.Through groundbreaking research and strong partnerships with rice farmers, governments, and the private sector, Decarbonising Rice has already demonstrated impressive results. In trials conducted in Singapore and India, the initiative has achieved methane emission reductions of 20% to 50%, decreased water use by nearly 50%, and increased yields by 5% to 10%. With 100-hectare trials now underway in India, Laos, and other regions, the project is scaling its impact and driving meaningful change in global rice production.

## How is it Game Changing?

Decarbonising Rice stands out for its innovative and scalable approach at the critical intersection of food security and climate action. By fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including farming communities, research institutions, and private-sector partners, the initiative not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also improves agricultural productivity and resilience. Its measurable success demonstrates the potential for science-backed solutions to address complex challenges while benefiting both the environment and the livelihoods of farmers.
