## The Problem

The steel industry is a major contributor to global carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, accounting for approximately 7% of total emissions worldwide. Traditional steel production relies heavily on coal and coke to reduce iron ore into iron, a process that emits significant amounts of CO₂. In Sweden, the steel sector is responsible for about 10% of the nation's total CO₂ emissions. As the world seeks to mitigate climate change, decarbonizing steel production has become imperative.


## The Solution

HYBRIT is setting a new standard for fossil-free steel production. This ambitious partnership between SSAB, LKAB, and Vattenfall aims to advance from a successful pilot phase to industrial-scale production by 2028, with the goal of cutting Sweden’s carbon dioxide emissions by at least 10%. The project aims to revolutionize steel production by replacing traditional carbon-intensive methods with a process that uses fossil-free hydrogen gas to reduce iron ore into sponge iron. This hydrogen-based direct reduction method emits water vapor instead of CO₂, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of steel manufacturing. After years of rigorous research and successful pilot trials, HYBRIT has demonstrated the feasibility of producing high-quality, fossil-free steel on an industrial scale.
