Strengthening health system resilience and protecting economies from climate and biological threats
Health Security challenges undermine economies and societies. Our ability to effectively anticipate, prevent and respond to a wide variety of shocks and stresses is critical to global health. Complex service demands exacerbated by climate impacts, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and emerging diseases are already impacting company operations, and workforce participation and productivity. Further economic losses due to AMR could amount to 3.8% of global GDP by 2050, future pandemics could cost our economies $18 trillion, and climate change's impacts on health could lead to 14.5 million additional deaths and $12.5 trillion in losses by 2050.
In response to these risks, the Forum's Health Security initiative aims to strengthen health system resilience and protect economies and societies from climate and biological threats through cross-sector and cross-border collaboration; and ensure partners are equipped with the knowledge, tools and networks they need to build resilient health systems. Our work includes advocacy and awareness-raising, unlocking finance, driving innovation and access, and building new partnership models.
By (1) unlocking new financing partnerships to scale health resilience solutions, (2) piloting and scaling a pipeline of innovative solutions to build health security, and (3) catalyzing public-private partnerships for strengthening health system resilience in exemplar countries, the Health Security initiative elevates leadership and mobilizes resilient solutions championed by our partners through an integrated strategic approach addressing shocks and disruptions.
The Health Security Initiative includes three communities focused on tackling different health threats:
