The Future of Clean Fuels initiative, led by the World Economic Forum’s Centre of Energy and Materials, aims to accelerate the deployment of clean fuels as a practical lever for regions and sectors to adapt to changes in the energy system and create inclusive economic opportunities.The initiative complements other Forum efforts such as the First Mover Coalition, Airports of Tomorrow and Transitioning Industrial Clusters, taking a holistic view across technologies, sectors, and regions to accelerate progress towards the future energy system.

## The challenge facing clean fuel investments

Despite growing ambitions, market risks and fragmented value chains continue to constrain clean fuel investments. Current investments in clean fuel production capacity estimated at $25 billion in 2025 falls far short of the at least $100 billion needed annually by 2030 to meet global energy security and climate objectives.Overcoming investment barriers requires new forms of public-private collaboration and innovation across energy value chains, from supply to infrastructure to demand, considering each region’s distinct resource base, cost structures, and consumption patterns.
