Summary

H2Houston is an initiative working to advance the clean hydrogen ecosystem in Texas, Southwest Louisiana, and along the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Industrial Ecosystem

Description

The U.S. Gulf Coast area represents one of the world’s largest energy clusters, with facilities across the states of Texas and Louisiana, with the highest concentration in the city of Houston.

Ecosystem metrics

• Emissions: 220 Mt CO2e GHG emitted annually (2019)

• GDP contribution: 6% of Texas GDP (2019)

• Jobs: no data

Project Activities and Assets

Description

The H2Houston is a project involving academic institutions, non-profit research groups, and major energy companies, focused on growing the clean hydrogen economy along the U.S. Gulf Coast. The initiative aims to build on the region’s existing energy infrastructure—such as pipelines, refineries, and gas processing facilities—while adding new assets like hydrogen pipelines and liquefaction plants to support industrial decarbonization and carbon capture.

Project impact

• Emissions: 880 Mt CO2e GHG prevented annually (from 21 Mt of hydrogen)

• GDP contribution: 100 billion USD added annually to current baseline GDP by 2050

• Jobs: 180,000 jobs added to current baseline by 2050
