The Humber Cluster represents a partnership for a series of decarbonization projects for the Humber estuary industrial zone, focusing on hydrogen and CCUS.
Industrial Ecosystem
Description
The Humber estuary hosts the UK’s second-largest chemical cluster, extensive petrochemical refineries, steel, cement, glass, and food processing operations, supported by major ports handling over 77 million tonnes of cargo annually. It also represents one of the UK’s largest energy hubs.
Ecosystem metrics
• Emissions: 19.8 Mt CO2e GHG emitted annually (2017)
Project Activities and Assets
Description
The Humber Cluster is one of the flagship projects in the Humber estuary, under the Future Humber initiative framework. Led by a group of businesses, the Humber Cluster represents a series of low carbon and decarbonization projects, as well as their associated inter-linking infrastructure, which aim to transform the Humber industrial cluster into the world’s first carbon neutral industrial cluster by 2040, through the deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage and Hydrogen production at scale.
Impact
• GDP contribution: 2 billion USD contributed up to 2050
• Jobs: 25,000 jobs added annually until 2050 (with a peak of 41,000 in 2026)
