The Indo-Pacific Net-Zero Battery-Materials Consortium (INBC) is a project for an integrated supply chain for EVs, leveraging Indonesia's nickel abundance and established existing infrastructure.
Industrial Ecosystem
Description
Sulawesi, particularly Central and Southeast Sulawesi, holds some of the world’s largest reserves of nickel, critical for EV batteries, making Indonesia the top global producer of this critical mineral. Key industrial areas on the island include the Morowali and Weda Bay Industrial Parks, which provide refining and processing infrastructure and port access.
Project Activities and Assets
Description
The Indo-Pacific Net-Zero Battery-Materials Consortium (INBC) project, comprising the Bakrie Group , Envision and Glencore, is aiming to devleop an integrated EV supply chain - from mining raw materials and generating renewable energy to producing and distributing batteries. The project aims to process approximately 94,000 tonnes of nickel annually – equivalent to 140 gigawatt hours (GWh) of nickel-based batteries, sufficient to power 2 million passenger EVs, and to develop 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy capacity through a combination of onshore wind farms and natural gas-based combined-cycle power plants.
Impact
• Emissions: 2.8 Mt CO2e GHG prevented annually by the project
• GDP contribution: 9 billion USD contributed annually by the project
• Jobs: 1,500 total created by the project
